Governor Ron DeSantis announces successful evacuation of 28 Floridians from Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the successful evacuation of 28 Floridians from Jamaica following the devastating impacts of powerful Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.
As Hurricane Melissa intensifies into a powerful Category 4 storm with the potential to reach Category 5 strength, U.S. authorities at Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, have begun evacuating non-mission-essential U.
Swells generated by Melissa will continue affecting Hispaniola, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands during the next couple of days. These dangerous swells will spread toward Bermuda later today, creating life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
The Navy has evacuated 864 family members, civilian employees, and contractors from Naval Station Guantánamo Bay as Hurricane Melissa powers toward the Caribbean as a Category 5 storm.
Melissa is expected to reach Jamaica early Tuesday, breaking records as the most powerful storm ever to hit the island. The most powerful before now was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which recorded winds of 130mph.
The gold medalist moved to an evacuation center as the historically devastating hurricane made landfall in Jamaica.
